Endevco, a division of PCB Piezotronics, has introduced its Modular 6DoF Sensor Family — a configurable, compact motion measurement solution that combines new triaxial accelerometers with the proven Model 7330 triaxial angular rate sensor. The family is designed to address the growing demand for complete six-degree-of-freedom motion measurement in automotive and aerospace testing environments.
Build Your 6DoF Sensor, Your Way
The modular architecture gives test engineers genuine flexibility. Two new accelerometers form the core of the family:
- Model 773A — a triaxial DC-response variable capacitance MEMS accelerometer for low-level acceleration measurement, available in ranges from 8 g to 200 g with both differential and single-ended output options.
- Model 776 — a triaxial piezoresistive accelerometer for shock and impact testing, offering a 2,000 g range with multi-mode damping and minimal zero shift for stable performance under high-input acceleration events.
Either accelerometer stacks directly with the Model 7330 triaxial angular rate sensor, providing three axes of rotation (pitch, roll, yaw). The result is a complete six-degree-of-freedom multi-axis vibration test systems measurement solution in a compact, low-mass form factor — capturing both translational and rotational motion simultaneously from a single co-located sensor assembly.
Why 6DoF Measurement Matters
Many dynamic test applications require knowledge of both translational acceleration and angular rate. Vehicle dynamics testing, automotive safety validation, spacecraft attitude determination, and aircraft flight testing all involve coupled motion that a triaxial accelerometer alone cannot fully characterise. By combining both sensor types in a stacked, synchronised package, the Modular 6DoF Sensor Family eliminates the complexity of separately mounting and aligning accelerometers and gyroscopes.
For laboratories running six-degree-of-freedom multi-axis vibration test systems test programmes or MIMO Vibration Control systems investigations, having a single, co-located measurement point for all six motion degrees simplifies both data acquisition and post-test analysis considerably.
Automotive and Aerospace Applications
Key application areas include vehicle dynamics and automotive safety testing, rollover and ATD testing, aircraft flight testing and structural response, spacecraft and satellite qualification, and missile testing. The wide operating temperature range — down to −40°C and up to +125°C for the 773A — supports demanding environmental conditions. An optional Model 7973 adhesive mounting plate supports quick, repeatable installation and easy removal after testing.
