IMV Corporation has released a significant upgrade to its A74 general-purpose vibration test system, achieving a maximum shock force of 300 kN in an air-cooled configuration — a performance level that previously required a large water-cooled platform. The development substantially reduces the infrastructure required for high-force shock testing, opening up demanding test applications to a wider range of laboratories.
300 kN Shock Force Without Water Cooling
The upgrade centres on a newly developed power module for the A74’s amplifier, designed entirely in-house by IMV’s engineering team. The enhanced A74/EM10HAG model now delivers:
- 300 kN maximum shock force at a velocity of 3.5 m/s
- High-velocity shock testing up to 4.6 m/s with the optional High Velocity Shock package — a capability IMV describes as currently unique worldwide
- Air-cooled operation, eliminating the need for outdoor cooling towers, large-scale water piping, and the associated civil engineering costs
Previously, laboratories needing 300 kN shock force had to specify a K125-class water-cooled vibration test system — a significantly larger and more expensive proposition. The upgraded A74 delivers the same performance in a more compact, infrastructure-light package.
What This Means for Test Laboratories
The reduction in ancillary infrastructure is significant in practice. Water-cooled vibration systems require dedicated plant rooms, cooling towers, and complex pipework — all of which add cost, lead time, and maintenance burden. By achieving the same shock force with air cooling, the upgraded A74 dramatically simplifies installation and ongoing operation.
For classic shock control and shock response spectrum analysis testing applications — particularly in automotive, defence, and industrial sectors — the A74 upgrade means more laboratories can now run demanding shock test programmes without the capital commitment of a large water-cooled system.
IMV Vibration Systems Available Through THP Systems
THP Systems is the authorised UK supplier for IMV Corporation, with the full range available from compact IMV A-Series vibration test system platforms through to the high-force IMV J-Series vibration test systems (16 kN to 54 kN) and the large-format IMV EM-Series (8 kN to 125 kN). For programmes requiring water-cooled performance in a proven platform, the IMV K-Series water-cooled vibration test system remains available.
Our team can advise on the right IMV system for your shock and vibration test requirements, and support integration with slip tables and head expanders, custom test fixtures, and combined environmental test chambers.
